Bimhuis
Piet Heinkade 3 (788 21 88). map
BimhuisInside.jpgAmsterdam's main jazz stage in spectacular 'Muziekgebouw' (House of Music) on the border of the river IJ, close to central station. Bimhuis is an internationally renowned contemporary jazz venue, and stages well-known international artists as well as local talent. The Bimhuis is a mix between concert hall and club, it still hosts open sessions for example (every Tuesday at 8pm).

Cafe Pakhuis Wilhelmina
Veemkade 576 (419 33 68). map
Live venue in an old warehouse in the docklands area, a bit out of city center but tram 26 will get you there just fine. Wilhelmina hosts live music and DJ's most nights of the week, on a pretty small stage, so it's all very intimate and up close. Drink and admission are cheap. One of the popular evenings is the Hardrock Karoake: sing your favorite rock classic backed by a professional rock band. You might want to brush up on your singing though...
Open Wed-Sun.

Heineken Music Hall
Arena Boulevard 590 (0900 687 42 42 55) [subway stop Strandvliet/Arena]
Megavenue with a capacity of over 5000 and acoustics engineered especially for live amplified music. Situated near the Arena stadium in Amsterdam South-East. Ideally suited for medium-size acts, and of course 'intimate' performances by big names. About the only thing in favour of its location is the excellent accessibility by public transport, and the parking facilities.
Times & admission varies.

Melkweg
Lijnbaansgracht 234 (531 81 81). map
Housed in a former dairy, the Melkweg (Milky Way) is Amsterdam's biggest multi-functional entertainment venue, and offers music, drama, movies, a club, a bar and a restaurant. The programming includes big(gish) international acts as well as local talent. In recent years a second concert hall was added, so the Melkweg is able to host double feature nights.
The hippies of yesteryear may have gone but every november the Melkweg still hosts the Cannabis Cup music events. Dance events are held during the weekend.
Times & admission varies, compulsory membership 3 per month.

De Nieuwe Anita
Frederik Hendrikstr 111 (06 415 03 512). map
Small alternative music venue a bit out of city center. De Nieuwe Anita has a strong living room feel to it, with the floral wallpaper, couches, chairs, and beers straight out of a fridge. A door in the back leads to the small stage area. The irregular and varied programming makes this place all the more exciting.
Open & admission varies.
