These words he speaks are true. As an EU national, for me it is a lot easier and much cheaper to get there than for you americanos. Amsterdam is great to visit, not great to live. There are much, much nicer parts of holland to live, please believe me. I lived in Holland for ages and enjoyed my "visits" to A'Dam but sure as hell would not like to live there.
I can understand the attraction of the place, especially to those from sexually repressed countries like USA, but my advice is to hold onto that steady number you have, save hard, and visit as often as possible!
I am now living in UK and have just booked a return flight from UK to Holland for less than 30!!! (about 40 Euros)
