Elegant but uncomplicated restaurant in Jordaan neighborhood with attentive and friendly service, which in Amsterdam still is a strong selling point. No frills French/international menu and an interesting choice of wines, all at moderate prices. The singer/pianist on Fridays and Saturdays brings a bit of authentic Jordaan atmosphere, but might not be to everybody's taste. Open Wed-Sun 6pm-11pm. Harkema Nes 67 (428 22 22). Large
brasserie in a former tobacco warehouse, on a small alley right in the middle
of the old city center. The industrial character of the warehouse, with
the large skylights, has been complemented by an elegant no frills interior
in browns and whites. Adequate French cuisine at affordable prices; worth

This former soup kitchen has been thoroughly rejuvenated and now offers a set 3-course menu that won't cost you much. | La Strada Nieuwzijds Voorburgwal 93 (625 02 76). A
bar-restaurant cleverly built into two adjacent monumental houses. While
retaining the old facades, la Strada sports a modern interior. The restaurant
is very popular with the gay/lesbian community. Varied menu, reasonable prices.Open 4pm-1am (3am weekends). Kitchen 5.30pm-10pm. Van Puffelen Prinsengracht 375-377 (624 62 70). On
first sight this seems to be another small 'brown' bar, but once you walk
into the back you step into the largest bar-restaurant in town. Although
enormous, van Puffelen has managed to retain an intimate atmosphere. During
the summer it's possible to sit outside on a barge moored in the canal.
Check the eye-catching ceiling, painted 'Michelangelo-style' with nude women

The famous Flying Saucer in Jordaan area server delicious vegetarian dishes in a friendly atmosphere. You might want to arrive a little early because they tend to run out of food, if you place your order at the counter in the back they'll tell you what they have left. Luckily what's left comes in large portions at small prices. Open daily 4pm-11pm. |
